Adopt a School

adopt_a_school1Our “One Love-One Community Adopt-A-School Program identifies and recruits business and industry supporters collaborate with to sponsor a school. Some of the ways proposed for businesses and industries to help students are to provide role models, tutor students, give mini-course lectures, share hobbies, give club sponsorship, sponsor contests, and provide industry specific guidance and mentoring. The aim of our Adopt-A-School program is to build links between businesses, students, teachers and the broader school community primarily through group mentoring. Our Adopt-A-School projects connect students with opportunities through experiential learning activities that will increase knowledge about training and preparation including soft skills and careers in a variety of industries.

Our program can benefit young people, particularly, youth who face challenges and obstacles that may hinder a successful transition through and from school to further education and employment. Our program is designed to help students with a range of low to high academic achievement. One Love-One Community Foundation, Inc. has adopted the Resiliency Model for the Adopt-A-School Program. This interactive model focuses on the role models that our youth model themselves after for socialization because this has a great impact on what the youth values. The Resiliency Model research findings show that when youth model their behaviors after adults who provide positive outlooks and expectations for them and who also share their challenges that youth develop skills and capacity for greater adaptability and appropriate responses to their environment. The Resilient Model also focuses on learning by doing, seeing, and living and offers a successful foundation for students to work with adult mentors or role models who work in their areas of career interest.

The One Love – One Community Foundation’s Adopt-A-School program will accomplish the following:

  • Deliver experiential learning for participating students;
  • Provide participating schools with industry mentors;
  • Produce a finished product and/or project
  • Celebrate the achievement of participating students through school-based and community-based events.
